The classic Krabi boat circuit: Chicken Island, Tup Island, Poda and Phra Nang, linked by sandbars at low tide.

The four islands sit in a shallow channel between Ao Nang and the Railay peninsula, which is why the water is turquoise and the sand is white — the currents drop sediment rather than washing it away. Koh Tub and Koh Mor are joined by a sandbar that appears at low tide and becomes the most photographed spot in Krabi.

The sandbar between Tup and Mor islands appears for a few hours a day and is one of those things you have to see to believe. Snorkelling is decent, beaches are excellent.

What you’ll actually see

  • The sandbar between Koh Tub and Koh Mor, walkable at low tide
  • Koh Gai's 'chicken island' rock formation and its fringing reef
  • Phra Nang Cave Beach, with its stalactites and the lingam shrine
  • Koh Poda's white sand spit and the shallow reef on its north side

How to visit it well

  • Go on a private longtail, not a shared speedboat.
  • Check the tide table — the sandbar only works at low tide.
  • Bring cash for the national park fee (THB 400).

Mistakes worth avoiding

  • Booking a speedboat when the longtail is cheaper and the route is the same
  • Coming at high tide and missing the sandbar entirely — check the tide table
  • Expecting empty beaches; by 11am there are 40 boats in the channel

Is it worth it?

Worth a day, with timing caveats. The sandbar and Koh Poda are genuinely beautiful; the rest is snorkelling over a reef that is not what it was. Go on a longtail, leave at 8am, and check the tide before you book.

Common questions

About 1,200 baht on a shared longtail with lunch and snorkel gear, 1,800–2,500 on a speedboat. A private longtail for six is around 3,500 baht.

At low tide, which shifts daily. Ask your boat operator for the tide time — the difference between a walkable sandbar and open water is about three hours.

Yes. Longtails charter from Ao Nang for around 3,000–3,500 baht for the day and you set the order, which usually beats the group itinerary.

Koh Gai, on the north side. The coral is patchy but there are more fish there than at Poda.
