Pai
A small town in a valley three hours and 762 curves north of Chiang Mai. Pai is mountains, hot springs, night markets and a very relaxed approach to scheduling.
Pai is a small town in a mountain valley 130km north of Chiang Mai, reached by 762 curves on Route 1095. It suits three nights: scooters, hot springs, canyons, and doing very little. It is a backpacker town that has become something broader.
The road and the valley
Route 1095 is famous for a reason — it is beautiful and it is winding. If anyone in the party gets car sick, fly into Chiang Mai and take the morning minibus rather than the afternoon one.
What to do
Pai Canyon at sunset, the Sai Ngam hot springs, Tha Pai and the Memorial Bridge. Most people end up doing less than they planned, which is the point.
Where to stay in Pai
Pai is small, but the difference between staying in the town and in the valley outside it is the difference between a busy little town and a quiet rice-field stay. Both work; only one has a 7-Eleven within walking distance.
- Pai town (walking street)$–$$
Best for: One or two nights, no scooter
Everything walkable, including the night market and the bus station.
- Valley outside town$$–$$$
Best for: Couples, longer stays, scooter users
Bungalows in the rice fields, 10 minutes from town; you need wheels.
Price bands are for a double room per night in high season: $ under THB 1,800 · $$ 1,800–4,500 · $$$ 4,500–10,000 · $$$$ above 10,000. We book hotels in every band and inspect them in person.
Mistakes worth avoiding
- Taking the minivan if you get car sick — the 762 curves are not a joke
- Coming in the burning season (March–April) when the valley is hazy
- Renting a scooter without a licence and without checking the brakes
Is it worth it?
Worth three nights if you ride a scooter and like mountains. It is not the untouched village of the stories — it is a busy small town — but the valley around it is genuinely beautiful and the pace is slow. Skip it in March and April.
