Kanchanaburi
The Bridge on the River Kwai, the Death Railway and Erawan's turquoise waterfalls, two hours west of Bangkok. River raft houses and jungle hills make it the easiest 'countryside' add-on to a city trip.
Kanchanaburi is the province west of Bangkok known for the Bridge on the River Kwai, the Death Railway and Erawan Falls. It is 130km from Bangkok and needs two days minimum: one for the war sites, one for the waterfalls.
History, handled carefully
The bridge and the war cemetery are the reason most people come, and they are best visited with a guide who can explain what happened without turning it into a spectacle. The train ride over the wooden viaduct at Tham Krasae is worth the schedule.
Erawan and the river
Erawan National Park has seven tiers of waterfall and clear water for swimming; go on a weekday morning. Overnight raft houses on the Kwai Noi are simple, quiet and a good break between Bangkok and the north.
Where to stay in Kanchanaburi
Kanchanaburi has three bases and they serve different trips: the town for the bridge and museums, the river for floating hotels, and the far west for Erawan and the national park.
- Kanchanaburi town$–$$
Best for: Bridge, museums, one-night stops
Walk to the bridge and the war cemeteries; the night market is the best eating.
- River Kwai (floating hotels)$$–$$$
Best for: Couples, two-night stays
Rooms on rafts with the river running past; 15 minutes from town, quiet at night.
- Sai Yok & Erawan$$
Best for: Waterfalls, national park
Puts Erawan and Hellfire Pass within 45 minutes; you need a car or a driver.
Price bands are for a double room per night in high season: $ under THB 1,800 · $$ 1,800–4,500 · $$$ 4,500–10,000 · $$$$ above 10,000. We book hotels in every band and inspect them in person.
Mistakes worth avoiding
- Doing the bridge as a photo stop and skipping the museums
- Missing Hellfire Pass, which is the most affecting site in the province
- Coming as a day trip from Bangkok and spending five hours in a minivan
Is it worth it?
Worth two nights, and one of the most rewarding places in central Thailand, but the reason is history rather than scenery. The bridge alone is underwhelming; the railway museums, the cemeteries and Hellfire Pass are not.
