Hua Hin
Thailand's original beach resort, three hours from Bangkok and popular with Bangkok families. Calm water, good seafood and enough golf to keep everyone happy.
Hua Hin is the royal beach town 200km south of Bangkok, with a 5km beach, a night market and a railway station built in 1926. It suits a short break from Bangkok — two or three nights — rather than a long beach holiday.
Easy beach, easy town
The beach runs along the town and the water is calmer than the Andaman. The old railway station, the night market and the fishing pier are all within a short walk of each other.
Around Hua Hin
Sam Roi Yot National Park and the Phraya Nakhon cave are an hour south; the vineyards of Monsoon Valley are 40 minutes west. Both make a good half-day if the sea is rough.
Where to stay in Hua Hin
Hua Hin is a town rather than a resort strip, so the base matters less than the distance to the beach. Anything within walking distance of the night market is convenient; the resorts north and south are quieter but need a car.
- Town centre (near the night market)$$–$$$
Best for: Short breaks, walkability
Beach, market and restaurants on foot; the busiest and most convenient part.
- Khao Takiab (south)$$$–$$$$
Best for: Families, quieter beach
Wider beach, big resorts, 10 minutes by car to the centre.
- Cha-am (north)$$
Best for: Value, Thai weekend crowds
Cheaper and more local, 30 minutes from Hua Hin; good for families on a budget.
Price bands are for a double room per night in high season: $ under THB 1,800 · $$ 1,800–4,500 · $$$ 4,500–10,000 · $$$$ above 10,000. We book hotels in every band and inspect them in person.
Mistakes worth avoiding
- Expecting a quiet fishing village — Hua Hin is a developed town with condos and traffic
- Coming in the rainy season (September–October), when the sea is rough and the town is empty
- Staying far from the centre and discovering you need a car for everything
Is it worth it?
Worth two or three nights as a Bangkok escape, especially with children or older relatives. The beach is good, the food is excellent and the town has a real centre. It is not the tropical paradise of the islands, and the sea is often choppy.
