Sukhothai
The first Thai capital, and the most peaceful of the great ruin sites. Sukhothai's historical park is flat, green and made for bicycles, with seated Buddhas framed by lotus ponds.
Sukhothai is the first Thai capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, 440km north of Bangkok. The old city is a walled park best explored by bicycle. One night and a full day, plus a half day at Si Satchanalai, is the right amount.
The park
Wat Mahathat is the centrepiece, but the smaller sites to the north and west are where you will be alone. Bikes can be rented at the gate; the whole park is 70km of flat road and shaded paths.
On the way north or south
Sukhothai sits between Bangkok and Chiang Mai, which makes it a natural one-night stop on the overland route. Si Satchanalai, 50km north, is quieter still and worth the detour.
Where to stay in Sukhothai
The historical park is 12km west of New Sukhothai, and where you sleep decides whether you see the ruins at sunrise. New Sukhothai is cheaper and livelier; the park side is quiet and expensive.

Best for: Budget, local food, buses
Guesthouses and the night market; 20 minutes by songthaew to the park.
Price bands are for a double room per night in high season: $ under THB 1,800 · $$ 1,800–4,500 · $$$ 4,500–10,000 · $$$$ above 10,000. We book hotels in every band and inspect them in person.
Mistakes worth avoiding
- Day-tripping from Phitsanulok and arriving at midday
- Exploring by car instead of bicycle — the park is flat, shaded and made for bikes
- Skipping Si Satchanalai, 55km north, which is quieter and arguably better
Is it worth it?
Worth an overnight and one of the most rewarding ruin sites in Southeast Asia. It is easier to like than Ayutthaya because it is greener, quieter and more compact. Start at 7am, rent a bicycle, and come back at 5pm.

Sukhothai is greener, quieter and easier to cycle. Ayutthaya is bigger, closer to Bangkok and has more monumental scale.
