Chiang Mai
Three hundred temples, a mountain on the doorstep and a food scene that quietly beats the capital. Chiang Mai moves slower than Bangkok and rewards people who let it.
Chiang Mai is the old Lanna capital in northern Thailand, 700km from Bangkok, with more than 300 temples and mountains on three sides. Four nights is the right amount: old city, Doi Suthep, one full-day trip, and one day for food and markets.
The old city and the mountain
The moated old city is walkable and full of teak temples. Doi Suthep sits 15 minutes up the mountain and is best at 7am, before the tour buses. Doi Inthanon, an hour and a half further, is a full day and worth it for the cloud forest.
Why people stay longer
Cooking classes, elephant sanctuaries, coffee farms and the Sunday Walking Street all sit within half an hour of each other. If you are building a two-week trip, give the north three nights rather than two — the difference is a day without a car.
Where to stay in Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai is small enough that almost anywhere works, but the choice between inside and outside the old city moat changes the feel of the trip. Inside is temples and guesthouses; outside is space, pools and the mountain road.
- Old city (in the moat)$$
Best for: First visits, temple-heavy trips
Walk to Wat Chedi Luang and the Sunday market; walls mean quiet lanes and low-rise guesthouses.
- Nimmanhaemin$$–$$$
Best for: Cafés, design, longer stays
The best coffee and food scene in the city; 15 minutes to the old city by songthaew.
- Riverside (Charoenrat)$$$
Best for: Couples, slower pace
Teak houses on the Ping River, restaurants on the water, 10 minutes from the night market.
- Mae Rim & the mountain road$$$–$$$$
Best for: Families and anyone with a car
Resorts with gardens and pools, 25 minutes from the city, on the way to Doi Suthep.
Price bands are for a double room per night in high season: $ under THB 1,800 · $$ 1,800–4,500 · $$$ 4,500–10,000 · $$$$ above 10,000. We book hotels in every band and inspect them in person.
Mistakes worth avoiding
- Coming in March and April, when farmers burn the fields and the air quality is among the worst in the world
- Only staying inside the old city walls, which is charming but gives no sense of the mountains
- Booking a day trip every day and never having an afternoon free
Is it worth it?
The best city in Thailand for most travellers. It has the culture and food of a capital with the pace of a town, and the mountains are 30 minutes away. Come November to February, stay four nights, and leave one day completely unplanned.

Planning Chiang Mai day by day
Common questions
Four nights. That covers the old city, Doi Suthep, one full-day trip to Doi Inthanon or an elephant sanctuary, and a Sunday Walking Street.
November to February, when it is cool and clear. Avoid March and April — the burning season makes the air genuinely unhealthy.
For most travellers, yes — cheaper, calmer, better food scene, mountains nearby. Bangkok wins on shopping, nightlife and flights.
No. Songthaews, Grab and a bicycle cover the old city. You only need a driver for the mountain day trips.
