Chiang Rai
Quieter, greener and stranger than Chiang Mai. Chiang Rai has the White Temple, the Blue Temple and the Golden Triangle, where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet at the Mekong.
Chiang Rai is the northernmost province of Thailand, 190km from Chiang Mai, best known for the White Temple and the Golden Triangle. Two nights is enough to see the temples, Doi Tung and the border, and it is far quieter than Chiang Mai.
Contemporary temples, mountain roads
Wat Rong Khun is a living artwork rather than a ruin, and it is best before 9am. The road north to Mae Sai and the Golden Triangle is a half-day drive through tea hills; we usually pair it with a boat on the Mekong.
Pairing it with Chiang Mai
The drive between the two cities takes three hours through mountains. Most travellers do Chiang Mai first, then Chiang Rai, then fly out — or cross into Laos by slow boat if they have the time.
Where to stay in Chiang Rai
Chiang Rai is a small, spread-out city and most of what you came for is outside it. Staying centrally keeps the night market and restaurants walkable; staying north puts the White Temple and the border road on your doorstep.
- City centre (Jed Yod / clock tower)$$
Best for: One-night stops, night market
Walk to the Saturday walking street and the restaurants around the clock tower.
- North of the river (Mae Kok)$$$
Best for: Quieter stays, river views
Small riverside hotels, 10 minutes from the centre, on the road to Mae Sai.
- Around the White Temple$$$
Best for: Early starts and photographers
Ten minutes from the temple gate at 8am, before the coaches arrive from Chiang Mai.
Price bands are for a double room per night in high season: $ under THB 1,800 · $$ 1,800–4,500 · $$$ 4,500–10,000 · $$$$ above 10,000. We book hotels in every band and inspect them in person.
Mistakes worth avoiding
- Doing it as a day trip from Chiang Mai — it is 3.5 hours each way
- Only seeing the White Temple and skipping the Golden Triangle and Doi Tung
- Coming in the burning season (March–April) when the hills disappear
Is it worth it?
Worth two nights and often skipped. The temples are the best modern religious architecture in Thailand, the Golden Triangle has real history, and the province is far less crowded than Chiang Mai. Pair it with a slow boat to Luang Prabang if you have time.
