Koh Phangan
Samui's quieter neighbour: jungle hills, empty northern beaches and one very loud night a month. Outside the Full Moon Party, Phangan is one of the calmest islands in Thailand.
Koh Phangan is the Gulf island 30 minutes from Koh Samui, known for the Full Moon Party at Haad Rin and for yoga retreats on the quieter north and west coasts. Five nights lets you do both.
Two islands in one
The south-east around Haad Rin is the party island, busy for four days a month and quiet the rest. The north and west — Srithanu, Chaloklum, Mae Haad — are yoga retreats, fishing villages and long empty sand.
Getting there and around
Ferries run from Samui every hour or so and take 30 minutes. The island ring road is steep and winding; a scooter is how most people get around, but the hills are not for beginners.
Who it suits
Three different holidays share the island: yoga and wellness around Srithanu, backpackers at Haad Rin for the Full Moon, and families on the quiet north-west beaches. Luxury is limited — there are good boutique resorts, but no big five-star names.
Practical
The ring road is steep and accidents are common; if you are not a confident rider, use songthaews or stay within walking distance. Power and water can be interrupted in heavy storms, and ATMs run out on full-moon weekends.
Where to stay in Koh Phangan
Koh Phangan has two personalities and they live on opposite coasts. Haad Rin is the Full Moon Party; the north and west are yoga, cafés and sunsets. Choose one, because the drive between them takes 40 minutes on mountain roads.
- Srithanu & Sri Thanu Bay$$–$$$
Best for: Yoga, quiet, good food
The best café scene in the Gulf and sunsets over Koh Samui; reef at low tide.
- Chaloklum & Thong Nai Pan$$
Best for: Families, beach time
Calm water and village life in the north; Thong Nai Pan is a 40-minute drive from the pier.
- Haad Rin$$–$$$
Best for: The Full Moon Party
Book months ahead for the party and leave the next day; it is quiet the rest of the month.
- Thong Sala$–$$
Best for: Ferry convenience, markets
The port and the night market; not a beach base but the cheapest and most practical.
Price bands are for a double room per night in high season: $ under THB 1,800 · $$ 1,800–4,500 · $$$ 4,500–10,000 · $$$$ above 10,000. We book hotels in every band and inspect them in person.
Mistakes worth avoiding
- Booking Haad Rin for a week when you only want one party night
- Coming three days before the full moon and finding every room booked
- Renting a scooter and attempting the mountain roads at night
Is it worth it?
Worth five nights, and a much better island than its party reputation suggests. The north and west coasts are quiet, the food is good, and the diving and snorkelling are decent. Go for the full moon or avoid it entirely — there is no middle ground.
