Ten days in Thailand fits two regions comfortably — Bangkok plus the north, or Bangkok plus one coast. Trying to add a third region means spending a fifth of the trip in transit. Three internal flights is the practical maximum.
The short version
- Bangkok (2 nights) + Chiang Mai (3) + one beach (4) is the safest shape.
- Anything with four hotel changes in ten days is a relay race, not a holiday.
- Internal flights are cheap but the airports eat four hours each.
- Leave the last day empty — you will want it.
Route 1: culture first, beach last
Bangkok 2 nights → Ayutthaya day trip → Chiang Mai 3 nights → Phuket 3 nights. This is the route in our Thailand Highlights tour and it works because the beach comes last, when you actually want to stop moving.
The only real cost is two flights: Bangkok–Chiang Mai and Chiang Mai–Phuket, both around an hour and cheap if booked early.
Route 2: the north only
Bangkok 2 → Sukhothai 1 → Chiang Mai 4 → Chiang Rai 2. No beach, no flights except home. This is the best route for food, temples and mountains, and it is noticeably cheaper.
Ten days in the north lets you do an elephant sanctuary, a cooking class and Doi Inthanon without ever feeling rushed.
Route 3: the Andaman
Phuket 3 → Phang Nga 1 → Krabi 3 → Koh Lanta 2. Boats, islands and very little driving. Fly into Phuket and out of Krabi to avoid backtracking.
This route is weather-dependent. From May to October, swap the Andaman for Koh Samui and the Gulf islands.
What to cut when something has to go
Ten days always involves a cut, and the cut people regret most is removing Chiang Mai to add a fourth beach. The north is the part of Thailand that cannot be replicated anywhere else; the beaches are excellent but the Andaman and the Gulf broadly resemble each other.
The second most common regret is adding Ayutthaya as a separate day instead of stopping there on the way to the airport. Ayutthaya is 80km north of Bangkok and works as a half-day en route, which saves a hotel change and a transfer.
What we would cut without hesitation: Pattaya (unless you want the islands and the Sanctuary of Truth), a second island in the same group, and any day that involves more than three hours of driving for fewer than three hours at the destination.
