Thailand is easier, better organised and stronger on beaches and food infrastructure. Vietnam is cheaper, more visually dramatic and better for adventurous travel. Thailand suits first-time Southeast Asia travellers and families; Vietnam suits travellers who have done the region before.
The short version
- Thailand wins on transport, beaches, hospitals and English.
- Vietnam wins on scenery, street food and price — roughly 20–30% cheaper.
- Thailand is easier with children and older travellers.
- Vietnam rewards travellers who are comfortable with chaos.
Beaches
Thailand wins on beach infrastructure: more islands, better hotels, easier boats, calmer water in the high season. Vietnam has beautiful beaches but fewer of them are set up for a two-week holiday.
If the trip is mostly beach, Thailand. If it is mostly landscape and cities, Vietnam is at least equal.
Food
Both are exceptional. Thai food is more accessible internationally and slightly sweeter; Vietnamese food is lighter and more herb-driven.
If you want to cook and eat seriously, do both — they are an hour apart by air.
Logistics and ease
Thailand is easier: better roads, more English, more domestic flights, more hotels at every price. Vietnam rewards more effort with fewer crowds and lower prices.
For a first trip in Asia with children or older travellers, Thailand is the lower-risk choice.
Doing both in one trip
The two countries combine well and the logistics are easier than people expect. Bangkok to Hanoi is a two-hour flight, Bangkok to Ho Chi Minh City is 90 minutes, and both run several times a day on low-cost carriers for $60–120. There is also a land crossing at Bavet and a slow boat route via the Mekong.
The shape that works is a fortnight split roughly 60/40 rather than 50/50, because switching countries costs a day. Ten days in Thailand and five in Vietnam is a better trip than seven and seven, and it means the second country feels like an addition rather than a second holiday.
What we would not do is bolt on two days in Hanoi at the end of a Thai beach trip. Hanoi in two days, after a week of sun, is a shock — cold, loud, motorbike-heavy — and it deserves at least four. If you only have a few days spare, add them to Thailand instead.
