Khao Lak's central beach: long, low-rise and quiet, with restaurants on the sand.

Khao Lak was almost entirely destroyed by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, which killed around 4,000 people in the area. Bang Niang was rebuilt with stricter setback rules, which is why the beach here is wide and unbuilt compared to Phuket. The tsunami memorial and the police boat that was swept 1km inland are both in the village.

It is the most practical base in Khao Lak — walking distance to the night market, the tsunami museum and the dive shops, and the beach is never crowded.

What you’ll actually see

  • The 7km beach at sunrise, when it is empty apart from fishermen
  • The tsunami memorial and the preserved police boat T813, inland from the beach
  • The Bang Niang market, Monday, Wednesday and Saturday from 3pm
  • The view north to the Khao Lak headland and the Surin islands beyond

How to visit it well

  • The international tsunami museum is worth an hour.
  • Swimming is seasonal; ask locally about currents in green season.
  • The Wednesday market is the best food in town.

Mistakes worth avoiding

  • Swimming in the monsoon season — the west-facing beach has a serious undertow
  • Expecting Phuket's nightlife; Khao Lak is quiet by design
  • Missing the market, which is the best evening activity in the area

Is it worth it?

The right base for Khao Lak and a good beach in its own right. It is quieter and cheaper than Phuket with easier access to the Similans. Stay on the beach side of the highway, not inland.

Common questions

November to April, yes. In the monsoon season the surf and undertow are dangerous and red flags are common.

Monday, Wednesday and Saturday from about 3pm to 10pm. There is also a smaller daily market.

About 70km, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes by car or shuttle.

The tsunami memorial and the police boat T813, which was carried inland by the wave in 2004. Both are free and sobering.
