A Swiss-style royal villa and hillside flower gardens on the Myanmar border, built by the late Princess Mother.
The Mae Fah Luang project was set up in the late 1980s by the King's mother, Princess Srinagarindra, to replace opium cultivation in the Golden Triangle with coffee, macadamia, flowers and tourism. It worked: the area went from one of the poorest in the north to self-sufficient. The villa itself is modest — a small house built in 1988 with Swiss alpine detailing — and the gardens carry the project's income.
The story is the draw: a royal project that replaced opium cultivation with coffee, macadamia and flowers. The gardens are genuinely beautiful and the air is cool.
What you’ll actually see
- The Mae Fah Luang Garden with its temperate flower beds and maze
- The royal villa's personal rooms, left much as they were
- The Hall of Inspiration, which documents the project's crop-substitution work
- The hill-tribe craft centre where weavers and embroiderers work on site
How to visit it well
- Go in the morning before the mist lifts from the valley.
- The Mae Fah Luang garden is the best part; the villa is a short tour.
- Combine with Mae Sai and the Golden Triangle.
Mistakes worth avoiding
- Coming in the rainy season and finding the gardens grey and the views gone
- Wearing shorts or vests — the villa has a strict dress code
- Only allowing an hour; the site is spread over several kilometres of hillside
Is it worth it?
Worth it if you are on the Chiang Rai–Mae Sai road, and better than most royal projects. The gardens are genuinely beautiful in the cool season. The story of the project — a mountain turned from opium to coffee — is the part that stays with you.
