'Hong' means room in Thai, and refers to the collapsed cave chambers that form these enclosed lagoons — open to the sky, ringed by vertical cliffs, reachable only through a cave passage at low tide. Koh Hong's lagoon is the largest in Krabi province and the reason the island group was made part of a national park.
Quieter than the four-island circuit and better for kayaking — you paddle through a cave into an enclosed lagoon. Good snorkelling on the outer reef.
What you’ll actually see
- The lagoon at Koh Hong, entered through a mangrove-lined channel
- The viewpoint on Koh Hong's north shore, a 10-minute climb over 400 steps
- Pelay Beach, a small white-sand spit on the east side of Koh Hong
- The reef between Koh Hong and Koh Pakbia, the best snorkelling in the group
How to visit it well
- Go by longtail from Ao Nang, not speedboat, if you want the hongs.
- Check the tide: the lagoon entrance is impassable at low water.
- Bring reef-safe sunscreen.
Mistakes worth avoiding
- Coming at low tide and finding the lagoon entrance too shallow to enter
- Booking a tour that stops at four islands in five hours — you get 30 minutes each
- Skipping the viewpoint climb; it is the best photograph in Krabi
Is it worth it?
Worth a day and better than the Four Islands route for scenery, though with less beach time. Check the tide before booking — without the lagoon, Koh Hong is just another island.
Common questions
From about 1,400 baht on a shared speedboat with lunch, kayaks and transfers. A private longtail for six is 4,000–5,000 baht.
November to April for calm water. The lagoon is best at mid-to-high tide, so check the tide table when booking.
Yes on a speedboat with life jackets. The lagoon is calm and shallow and the beaches are gentle.
Hong Islands for scenery and the lagoon, Four Islands for beaches and the sandbar. If you only do one, do Hong.
