Kata Noi Beach
A 700-metre cove south of Kata, sheltered by headlands, with the best swimming on Phuket's west coast.
Kata Noi is the small southern neighbour of Kata Beach, 1.5km long, sheltered by headlands at both ends. It is the quietest of Phuket's main west-coast beaches and free to use. Half a day is plenty unless you are staying there.

A 700-metre cove south of Kata, sheltered by headlands, with the best swimming on Phuket's west coast.
Kata Noi sits in a bay owned largely by one resort, which has kept the shoreline free of the umbrella-and-jet-ski economy that dominates Patong and Kata Yai. The swimming is good in the November-to-April season, and the reef at the southern headland is one of the few places on Phuket's west coast where you can snorkel from the sand.
It is small enough to feel like a cove rather than a resort strip, the water is calm in high season, and the sunset from the southern end is the best on the island.
What you’ll actually see
- The reef at the south headland, best at high tide with a mask
- Sunset from the northern rocks, with Koh Pu in the foreground
- The view down from Kata Viewpoint, 10 minutes up the hill
- The small beach restaurants at the north end, where the sand meets the road
How to visit it well
- Parking is limited; arrive before 10am.
- Swim between the flags — there is a rip at the southern end.
- The beach restaurants at the north end are cheap and good.
Mistakes worth avoiding
- Swimming in the monsoon season (May–October) when the rip current is genuinely dangerous
- Expecting nightlife — there is none beyond a handful of restaurants
- Parking on the road in high season; use the paid lot at the north end
Is it worth it?
The best beach on Phuket for swimming with children and the only one on the west coast that still feels like a beach rather than a market. If you want umbrellas, bars and jet skis, go to Kata Yai next door.
Common questions
Yes from November to April. In the monsoon season the undertow is strong and red flags are common — do not ignore them.
Considerably. It has one resort, a handful of restaurants and no beach clubs.
Yes, at the southern headland, best at high tide. It is small-scale but there are fish and soft coral.
About 20 minutes south of Karon by car or tuk-tuk. It is the last beach before Promthep Cape.
