Na Muang means 'purple water' in reference to the violet rock the falls run over. Na Muang 1 is the easy one, a 18-metre drop a short walk from the car park with a pool you can swim in. Na Muang 2 is 30 minutes further up and is the one worth the effort — a smaller fall with a rock shelf that forms a pool with a view over the south coast.
The easiest jungle excursion from Samui's beaches: a short walk, a swim, and a very different side of the island. Na Muang 2 is the better of the two.
What you’ll actually see
- Na Muang 1's 18-metre fall and its swimming pool, five minutes from the road
- Na Muang 2's rock-ledge pool, 30 minutes up a shaded trail
- The rubber and coconut plantations on the road in
- The small elephant camps nearby — visit with caution, riding is not recommended
How to visit it well
- Na Muang 1 is roadside; walk 20 minutes further to Na Muang 2.
- The rocks are slippery — wear shoes, not flip-flops.
- Combine with a stop at the island's rubber and coconut farms.
Mistakes worth avoiding
- Stopping at Na Muang 1 and assuming you have seen it
- Coming in the dry season (March–May) when the flow is a trickle
- Wearing smooth-soled shoes; the rock at Na Muang 2 is slippery
Is it worth it?
Worth two hours in the rainy season, not worth the trip in April. Na Muang 2 is the reason to come. If you want a waterfall in the dry season, go to the smaller Hin Lat falls instead.
