A narrow ridge of eroded clay with views over the Pai valley, and forest hot springs twenty minutes further north.
The canyon is a narrow ridge of eroded sandstone with 100-metre drops on both sides, formed by wind and rain on soft rock. Sai Ngam is a natural hot spring on the banks of a stream, where hot water seeps through the sand into the cold water — you dig your own pool and sit in it. Both are on the road south toward Chiang Mai, which makes them a natural pairing.
The canyon is a ten-minute walk from the road and the sunset view is the best in the valley. The hot springs are undeveloped, warm and quiet — the opposite of a resort spa.
What you’ll actually see
- The canyon's narrowest ridge, 50cm wide with drops on both sides
- Sunset from the western viewpoint, when the valley fills with haze
- The hot springs at Sai Ngam, where you dig a pool in the sand
- The Pai Memorial Bridge, a WWII-era crossing on the same road
How to visit it well
- Go for sunset; the ridge is exposed, so bring water.
- The canyon edge is unfenced — stay on the marked path.
- Sai Ngam has separate men's and women's pools; dress accordingly.
Mistakes worth avoiding
- Walking the narrow ridge in flip-flops — people fall here
- Coming to the canyon at midday; it is fully exposed
- Expecting developed hot springs with pools — Sai Ngam is a stream bank and a spade
Is it worth it?
Worth a half day by scooter, and the canyon at sunset is the best thing near Pai after the drive itself. The hot springs are charming rather than luxurious. Do both in one loop with the Memorial Bridge.
