A working vineyard in the Khao Yai hills, with tastings, a restaurant and vineyard tours.

The Khao Yai wine region sits at 350 metres on red volcanic soil, which turned out to suit Shiraz and Chenin Blanc better than anyone expected when the first vines were planted in the 1990s. PB Valley was the first commercial winery and is still the largest, with 400 rai under vine and a restaurant that uses the estate's own produce.

Thai wine is better than its reputation, and the setting — vines against a jungle ridge — is lovely. A good counterpoint to a morning of hiking.

What you’ll actually see

  • The vineyard rows against the Khao Yai ridge, best at 4pm
  • The winery itself, with the fermentation tanks and barrel hall
  • The tasting room, with six wines including the Pirom Reserve
  • The restaurant terrace, where lunch is served with the vineyard in front of you

How to visit it well

  • Book the tour and tasting in advance at weekends.
  • The restaurant is the best lunch in the Khao Yai area.
  • Sunset over the vines is the photo.

Mistakes worth avoiding

  • Coming without booking — tours run on a schedule and fill up at weekends
  • Expecting Burgundy; Thai wines are good but different, and the whites outperform the reds
  • Skipping the GranMonte estate 20 minutes away, which is smaller and arguably better

Is it worth it?

Worth two hours if you are in Khao Yai, and a pleasant contrast to the forest. The wines are genuinely drinkable and the setting is beautiful. Combine it with the national park for a full day, winery in the afternoon.

Common questions

From 350 baht for the basic winery tour and tasting. The full tour with reserve wines is around 600 baht.

Yes, especially at weekends. Tours run at set times and the last one is usually 4pm.

The whites — Chenin Blanc and Colombard — are the strongest. The Shiraz is decent but inconsistent vintage to vintage.

About 30km, 40 minutes by car from the park's north entrance.
