Sino-Portuguese shophouses, cafés, galleries and the Sunday Lard Yai market on Thalang Road.
The town grew rich on tin in the late 19th century, when Hokkien Chinese merchants and Portuguese-era building traditions combined into the shophouse style you see today: a narrow façade, an arched arcade, pastel plaster and interior courtyards open to the sky. Many of the buildings were abandoned by the 1990s and have been restored since the old town was listed as a heritage area in 2000.
It is the part of Phuket that has nothing to do with beaches: tin-mining money, Hokkien Chinese families, and some of the best coffee on the island.
What you’ll actually see
- The arcaded shophouses on Thalang Road, painted duck-egg blue, ochre and rose
- Soi Romanee, the narrow lane of restored houses now full of cafés
- The Thai Hua Museum in a 1911 Chinese school building
- The Sunday Lard Yai walking street, 4pm to 10pm on Thalang Road
How to visit it well
- Come at 5pm for the shophouse light, stay for Lard Yai.
- Eat at one of the old kopitiams on Dibuk Road.
- The Thai Hua Museum explains the tin era in 30 minutes.
Mistakes worth avoiding
- Coming at 2pm in April — the arcades give shade but the heat is still punishing
- Only walking Thalang Road and missing Soi Romanee and Krabi Road
- Expecting a beach town; this is 40 minutes from the nearest beach
Is it worth it?
Worth half a day, and the best thing in Phuket that is not a beach. The architecture is genuinely good and the food scene — Hokkien noodles, o-tao, kopi — is the most interesting on the island. Come for the Sunday market if your dates allow.
