The ruins of the first Thai capital: seated Buddhas, lotus ponds, brick columns and very few people.
Sukhothai was the capital from 1238 to 1438 and is where the Thai script, Theravada Buddhism as a state religion and the classic walking-Buddha posture were consolidated. The old city is a walled rectangle of 3km by 2km with a moat, and most of the monuments inside it have been restored by the Thai Fine Arts Department with UNESCO support.
It is quieter and greener than Ayutthaya, and the scale is human. Cycling between the temples at 7am, with mist on the ponds, is the northern plains at their best.
What you’ll actually see
- Wat Mahathat's lotus-bud chedi and the rows of columns of its ordination hall
- The walking Buddha at Wat Tra Phang Ngoen, the image that defines the Sukhothai style
- Wat Si Sawai, a Khmer-style prang complex that predates the Thai city
- Wat Saphan Hin, on a hill west of the walls, best at sunrise
How to visit it well
- Rent a bicycle at the gate; the park is flat.
- Wat Si Chum's giant seated Buddha is outside the central zone.
- Stay overnight — the town is small and pleasant.
Mistakes worth avoiding
- Doing it from a car — the park is flat, shaded and made for bicycles
- Coming at midday; the central zone has little shade
- Skipping Si Satchanalai, 55km north, which is quieter and arguably better
Is it worth it?
Worth a full day and one of the most rewarding ruin sites in Southeast Asia. Rent a bicycle at the gate for 50 baht, start at 7am, and come back at 5pm for the light. Stay overnight in New Sukhothai rather than day-tripping from Phitsanulok.
