Sunday Walking Street
A kilometre of Ratchadamnoen Road closed to traffic every Sunday evening, filled with crafts, food stalls and temple courtyards used as food courts.
The Sunday Walking Street runs down Ratchadamnoen Road from Tha Phae Gate to Wat Phra Singh every Sunday from 4pm to around 11pm. It is the best craft market in Thailand — roughly a kilometre of hand-made goods, food stalls and street musicians.

A kilometre of Ratchadamnoen Road closed to traffic every Sunday evening, filled with crafts, food stalls and temple courtyards used as food courts.
The market started in the 1990s as a small craft fair for villagers from surrounding districts and grew into the weekly event that now defines Chiang Mai's old city. Several temple courtyards along the route open as food courts, which is why you eat khao soi sitting under a 600-year-old chedi.
The best night market in Thailand for things you actually want to buy — handmade textiles, lacquerware, prints — and the food is genuinely local.
What you’ll actually see
- Wat Phra Singh and Wat Chedi Luang courtyards turned into open-air food courts
- Hill-tribe textiles and silver from Mae Hong Son sellers near the west end
- Hand-thrown celadon and lacquerware from Sankamphaeng workshops
- The blind musicians and student bands spaced along the road
How to visit it well
- Start at Tha Phae Gate and walk west; it gets less crowded as you go.
- Eat inside Wat Phan Tao's courtyard rather than on the street.
- Prices are fixed on food, negotiable on crafts.
Mistakes worth avoiding
- Arriving at 4pm when half the stalls are still setting up — go at 6pm
- Eating at the first food stall you see instead of walking the whole length first
- Forgetting cash; almost nobody takes cards
Is it worth it?
Genuinely worth rearranging your week for. It is crowded, hot and slightly chaotic, but the ratio of handmade to imported tat is far better than the Night Bazaar, and prices are fixed and fair. Give it three hours minimum.
Common questions
Stalls open from 4pm and it is busiest from 6pm to 9pm. It winds down around 11pm.
No. The Night Bazaar on Chang Klan Road runs every night and is mostly imported goods. The Sunday Walking Street is weekly and mostly handmade.
Songthaews drop at Tha Phae Gate. The road closes to traffic from 4pm so taxis will stop a block away.
Plenty — look for the yellow 'jay' flags, which mark vegan stalls during festival weeks, and the fruit and sticky rice stands.
