“The guide explained the railway history without dramatising it. Careful, honest and very well organised.”

Doi Suthep Alms-Giving Morning
Before sunrise, before breakfast: alms to the monks, chanting at the temple and the city waking up below.
A private early-morning trip to Doi Suthep for the alms-giving and the 7am temple opening, from $55 per person. It leaves Chiang Mai at 5:45am and returns by 10am, and it is the only way to see the temple without crowds.
Before sunrise, before breakfast: alms to the monks, chanting at the temple and the city waking up below.
Best for: Early risers and photographers. The route runs Chiang Mai. Everything below is a starting point: hotels can be upgraded or simplified, days can be added, and any element can be removed.
The temple opens at 6am and the coach parties start at 9:30am. Between those times the upper terrace belongs to monks, pilgrims and about fifteen other people. That window is the reason this trip exists, and it is why the departure is 5:45am rather than 8am.
The alms-giving — offering rice and food to monks on their morning round — happens before the temple, at a spot on the mountain road where the monks pass at dawn. It is a genuine religious practice rather than a demonstration, and the guide explains the protocol so that you are participating rather than photographing.
