“Six nights on a boat with eight strangers and it never once felt crowded. The cook was the best part.”

Mae Hong Son: Mist & Tea
Four days in Thailand's most remote province: the lake temple at dusk, a tea village on the border and a river cave.
Mae Hong Son: Mist & Tea is a 4-day private trip from Chiang Mai, from $720 per person, focused on Ban Rak Thai, Tham Lod cave, Pang Ung lake and the Shan temples. It is for repeat visitors and photographers.
Four days in Thailand's most remote province: the lake temple at dusk, a tea village on the border and a river cave.
Best for: Repeat visitors and photographers. The route runs Chiang Mai · Mae Hong Son. Everything below is a starting point: hotels can be upgraded or simplified, days can be added, and any element can be removed.
This is the trip for people who have already done Chiang Mai and want the far north without a tour bus. Four days covers the flight or drive up, two nights in Mae Hong Son town, a day at Ban Rak Thai on the Myanmar border, and Tham Lod cave timed for the dusk bat flight.
The photography is the subtext. Ban Rak Thai's reservoir at 6:30am with mist on the water and the mountains behind it is the best single image in northern Thailand, and Pang Ung — a reservoir ringed by pine and Shan villages — is the second. Both require early starts, which is why the trip is four days rather than two.
Day by day
To Mae Hong Son
Fly or drive from Chiang Mai, evening at Wat Jong Kham.
Ban Rak Thai
Morning mist on the reservoir, tea terraces, Yunnanese lunch.
Tham Lod
Cave raft in the afternoon, swifts at dusk, back to town.
Return
Morning market, then the flight or road back to Chiang Mai.
How the days are paced
Four days, two hotels, and a 30-minute flight instead of the 4-hour drive. Two 6am starts. No day involves more than three hours of driving.

What travellers say about trips like this
“Excellent guiding and a beautiful route. One hotel was below the standard of the others and they refunded the difference without argument.”
“Three weeks is a long time to be organised. Nothing fell through, and the one thing that did — a cancelled flight — was rebooked before we reached the airport.”
