A Thailand honeymoon works best with three bases over 8–11 days: a city, a coast and an island. The two mistakes are too many hotel changes and a beach-only trip, which gets boring by day five.
The short version
- Three bases maximum in 10 days; four is too many for a honeymoon.
- Balance one city with the beach — Bangkok's food scene is the contrast that makes the coast feel earned.
- Choose the coast by season: the Gulf Jan–Aug, the Andaman Nov–Apr.
- Book the details (private dinner, spa, boat) as part of the package, not on arrival.
The right shape
Two nights in Bangkok to reset from the flight, three or four somewhere with a view, then a private villa with a pool where nothing is scheduled. That is ten days and it does not feel rushed.
The mistake is three islands in eight days. Transfers eat a day each time, and honeymoons are the one trip where doing less is objectively better.
Where to stay
Bangkok riverside for the first two nights; Chiang Mai for boutique Lanna hotels; Krabi or Koh Samui for the villa. Phuket is fine but busier, and the good villas there cost more for the same thing.
What to book early
Private pool villas in high season, spa treatments, and any boat day you care about. Restaurants for the actual date — the good ones book out weeks ahead on Valentine's and Christmas.
What to skip
The things we would leave out of a Thailand honeymoon are mostly the things sold as romantic. Sunset dinner cruises on the Chao Phraya are crowded and the food is mediocre; hotel 'romance packages' usually amount to a bottle of sparkling wine and petals on a bed for $150; and a couples' spa in a hotel costs four times what the same treatment costs a block away.
What actually works is quieter and cheaper. A private longtail at 6:30am on the Bangkok canals. A table on the sand at a beach restaurant where nobody is performing. A villa with a pool and no schedule. A guide who understands that the best day might involve doing nothing at all.
The other thing to skip is the last-minute island hop. Adding Koh Tao to a Samui honeymoon for two nights means a day of ferries in each direction. If you want two islands, give each a proper stay or drop one.
