Kantiang Bay
The best beach on Koh Lanta's south coast: a deep curve of sand, two beach bars and a headland that blocks the afternoon wind.
Kantiang Bay is the southernmost of Koh Lanta's west-coast beaches, a 600-metre curve of sand backed by hills rather than resorts. It is free, quiet, and the best place on the island for sunset and swimming.

The best beach on Koh Lanta's south coast: a deep curve of sand, two beach bars and a headland that blocks the afternoon wind.
Kantiang stayed undeveloped longer than the northern beaches because the road south was unpaved until the early 2000s. Even now the bay has a handful of small resorts and restaurants rather than a strip, mostly because the hills behind it limit how much can be built. The reef at the southern headland is one of the few on Lanta you can snorkel from shore.
It is the most sheltered and swimmable beach on the island, and the one place where the sunset is worth planning dinner around. Small enough that you recognise people by day two.
What you’ll actually see
- Sunset from the beach, with Koh Rok visible on the horizon in clear weather
- The reef at the southern headland, best at high tide from November to April
- The small fishing village at the north end, where longtails still land
- The view from the hill road down to the bay, best at 5:30pm
How to visit it well
- The southern end is quieter and has better snorkelling at the rocks.
- Swim between the flags in high season; there is a current off the headland.
- Book dinner at a beachfront table before sunset.
Mistakes worth avoiding
- Swimming in the monsoon season — the bay faces west and the undertow is serious
- Expecting nightlife; there are about six restaurants and no bars beyond them
- Staying inland and assuming you can walk to the beach easily — the hill is steep
Is it worth it?
The best beach on Koh Lanta if you want quiet, and the only one that still feels like a bay rather than a resort strip. Worth basing yourself here for three or four nights if you have a scooter.
