The southern tip of Koh Lanta: a lighthouse, a cliff trail, two quiet beaches and a jungle full of monkeys.
The park was declared in 1990 and covers 134km² including 15 islands, of which Koh Lanta Yai is the largest. The southern tip is the last stretch of intact coastal forest on the island — the rest was cleared for rubber and palm — and the lighthouse there marks the channel used by ships heading for the Strait of Malacca.
It is the wild end of an already quiet island. Walk the trail to the second beach and you will likely have it to yourself.
What you’ll actually see
- The white lighthouse at the southern cape, with the Andaman on both sides
- The 2km nature trail through coastal forest, with hornbills and dusky langurs
- Ta Noad Beach and Bamboo Bay, the two beaches inside the park
- The old lighthouse keeper's house, now a small museum
How to visit it well
- Rent a scooter or take a songthaew — it is 18km from Long Beach.
- The lighthouse trail is steep but short.
- Watch your bag; the monkeys are bold.
Mistakes worth avoiding
- Arriving without transport — it is 25km from Long Beach and there are no taxis
- Coming at midday; the cape has almost no shade
- Expecting facilities; there is one small shop and no restaurant
Is it worth it?
Worth a half day, and the best thing on Koh Lanta after the beaches. The cape is genuinely beautiful and the wildlife trail is the only place on the island where you will see real forest. Come in the morning and bring water.
