“We didn't want a tour. We wanted someone who knew the country to make the week work. That is exactly what we got.”

Ayutthaya by Vintage Rail
Third-class train from Bangkok, bicycles through the ruins, sunset at Wat Chaiwatthanaram and a private car home.
A full-day private trip to Ayutthaya using the vintage railcar and a car between the ruins, from $95 per person. It covers Wat Mahathat, Wat Phra Si Sanphet, Wat Chaiwatthanaram and Bang Pa-In in one day from Bangkok.
Third-class train from Bangkok, bicycles through the ruins, sunset at Wat Chaiwatthanaram and a private car home.
Best for: A full day out of Bangkok. The route runs Ayutthaya. Everything below is a starting point: hotels can be upgraded or simplified, days can be added, and any element can be removed.
The train is the point as much as the ruins. The vintage railcar runs from Bangkok's Hua Lamphong station with wooden seats and open windows, and it is the only way to arrive in Ayutthaya that feels like arriving. From the station a car takes you between the sites, which is essential — they are spread over 5km and walking between them in 35°C ruins the day.
The itinerary runs Wat Mahathat and the Buddha head in the tree roots first, before the coach parties, then Wat Phra Si Sanphet, lunch at the riverside market, Wat Chaiwatthanaram in the afternoon light, and Bang Pa-In on the way back. It is a long day — eleven hours door to door — but it is the most efficient use of a single day out of Bangkok.
