A bend in the Chao Phraya that was never built on: raised concrete paths, jungle, stilt houses and no cars.
The area was never developed because it sits in a flood zone, so it kept its orchards, canals and stilt houses while Bangkok built around it. It is officially a green zone, and locals still call it the lung of the city.
It is the strangest and most rewarding half-day in Bangkok — you cross the river by ferry and cycle through a village that feels a hundred kilometres from the city.
What you’ll actually see
- The raised concrete paths between canals and orchards
- Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan park and its birdwatching tower
- Stilt houses and small temples along the water
- The ferry crossing itself, ten baht and two minutes
How to visit it well
- Take the ferry from Wat Klong Toei pier.
- Rent a bike at the pier; the paths are flat and shaded.
- The Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan park has a birdwatching tower.
Mistakes worth avoiding
- Arriving without a bike — the loop is 20km and there is no public transport
- Going at midday; there is shade, but humidity is high
Is it worth it?
The strangest and most rewarding half-day in Bangkok, and almost no tourists do it. Go in the morning, rent a bike at the pier, and eat lunch in the market.
