Bangkok's Central Park: 57 hectares of lake, jogging paths, outdoor gyms and very large monitor lizards.
The park opened in 1925 on royal land and is named after Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha. It has been the city's breathing space ever since — and, in 2020, the unlikely home of a colony of water monitors that became a local celebrity.
The only place in the city where you can be surrounded by green in ten minutes. Early morning is best — aerobics, tai chi, and the lizards swimming across the lake.
What you’ll actually see
- The lake at 6:30am, with aerobics groups on the lawn
- Monitor lizards swimming across the water
- Swan boats for rent on the lake
- The outdoor gym, which is free and busy at dawn
How to visit it well
- Rent a swan boat on the lake for 40 baht.
- The monitor lizards are harmless; give them space.
- MRT Lumphini and BTS Sala Daeng both open onto the park.
Mistakes worth avoiding
- Going at 2pm — there is shade but the heat is brutal
- Approaching the lizards for a photo
Is it worth it?
Not a sight, but a good hour if you need green space between temples. Best combined with Jim Thompson House nearby.
