“Travelling with a five and an eight year old, the no-flights decision saved us. Erawan's lower pools were shallow enough that the little one stood up in them. The car seats were there without us chasing.”

Thailand with a Family
An elephant sanctuary, river rafting at Kanchanaburi, a night train experience without the sleeper and a beach finish in Hua Hin.
Thailand with a Family is a 9-day private trip from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi to Hua Hin, from $1,360 per person, built for families with children aged four and up. It avoids long transfers, internal flights and anything that requires a 5am start.
An elephant sanctuary, river rafting at Kanchanaburi, a night train experience without the sleeper and a beach finish in Hua Hin.
Best for: Families with children aged 4 and up. The route runs Bangkok · Kanchanaburi · Hua Hin. Everything below is a starting point: hotels can be upgraded or simplified, days can be added, and any element can be removed.
The design constraint is the four-year-old. That means no internal flights if it can be avoided, no more than two and a half hours in a vehicle on any day, and a pool at every hotel. Bangkok gets two nights with a longtail ride and a market rather than a temple marathon; Kanchanaburi gets two nights for the railway and Erawan Falls; Hua Hin gets four nights of beach, which is what children actually want.
The activities are chosen to survive a bad mood. Erawan's lower tiers are shallow enough for a four-year-old to stand in. The elephants at Kanchanaburi are observed, not ridden. The Hua Hin section includes a cave, a palace and a night market, all of which take under three hours and can be abandoned halfway without wasting the day.

Three to six months ahead for the best hotels, and by September for travel over Christmas and New Year. Green-season trips can usually be arranged with six weeks’ notice.
Four, mainly because of the Erawan Falls walk and the boat in Bangkok. We run a modified version for families with younger children that swaps Erawan for a hotel pool day.

Reviews for this trip
“Very well thought out for children — the guide carried snacks, knew where every toilet was, and never pushed when the kids had had enough. Hotel pools in Kanchanaburi were small; the Hua Hin ones made up for it.”
