“The elephant sanctuary they chose was small, quiet and clearly about the animals. That alone was worth booking direct.”

Best for: A day off the beach. The route runs Koh Tao. Everything below is a starting point: hotels can be upgraded or simplified, days can be added, and any element can be removed.
Koh Tao's reef is the best in the Gulf and most of it is reachable from a longtail in ten minutes. This trip runs four sites — Shark Bay, Aow Leuk, Hin Wong Bay and the Japanese Garden at Koh Nang Yuan — chosen for the day's conditions rather than a fixed itinerary.
Shark Bay is named for the blacktip reef sharks that patrol the shallows; they are harmless and about a metre long, and swimming with them is the highlight for most people. Aow Leuk has the best coral. The Nang Yuan sandbar is the photograph at the end.

“Fourteen days and not one wasted morning. The only thing I would change is staying a fourth night in Krabi.”
