Thailand in February: dry, warm, slightly quieter

February keeps January's weather but loses the crowds, which makes it the most comfortable month to actually travel around.

Thailand in February: dry, warm, slightly quieter

February keeps January's weather and loses the crowds. The Andaman is dry with 20–30m visibility, the Gulf is calm, and prices are 10–20% below the December peak. It is the most comfortable month to move around.

The short version

  • Same weather as January with fewer people.
  • The best month for diving in the Similans — visibility and manta season.
  • Chinese New Year (late January or February) briefly lifts prices in cities.
  • The north is still cool and clear, with haze building only at the end.

Weather

Dry and warm, 26–33°C. The Andaman is still calm; the north is warming up but the mornings remain cool. The haze season has not started yet.

Why we like it

Hotel rates drop after the first week, boats are easier to book, and the light is excellent for photography. It is the month we recommend to travellers who want to move between three or four places.

Watch for

Chinese New Year in late February fills Bangkok and Phuket for a long weekend. Book those dates early or avoid them.

Where to go in February

February is the most flexible month of the dry season, so the choice is about what you want to do rather than where the weather allows. Divers should be in the Similans or on a liveaboard out of Khao Lak — February has the best visibility of the year and the manta rays are at Koh Bon.

Everyone else: the Andaman for beaches and boats, the north for mountains before the haze builds, and Bangkok for a city that is at its most bearable. The full moon party on Koh Phangan falls in February and the island fills for it.

One thing to watch is Chinese New Year, which lands in late January or February depending on the lunar calendar. It lifts prices in Bangkok, Phuket and Chiang Mai for about four days and fills the flights from China and Singapore. If you are not part of it, travel either side.

The bottom line

The best-value month of the dry season and the one we book most often for diving. If you want the Similans at their best without December prices, February is the answer.
