Thailand in July: green season on the Gulf

July splits the country: the Andaman is rough and often wet, the Gulf is frequently lovely, and prices everywhere are 30–40% lower. It is the month to choose the coast based on the monsoon rather than the other way round.

The short version

  • The Gulf (Samui, Phangan, Tao) is the reliable coast in July.
  • The Andaman sees rough seas and cancelled boat trips.
  • Asalha Bucha and Khao Phansa (Buddhist Lent) fall in July.
  • European school holidays push prices up in the Gulf, down on the Andaman.

Two coasts, two seasons

The Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi) gets swell and afternoon rain. The Gulf (Samui, Phangan, Tao) is usually dry and calm in July — one of its best months.

If your heart is set on the Andaman in July, expect some cancelled boat days and plan around them.

The upside

Low season is genuinely good value: the same hotels at half the price, empty temples in the north, and green rice fields. Rain tends to come in a single heavy afternoon burst.

What to book

Koh Samui and Koh Tao are the safe bets. For culture, the north is excellent — just bring a rain jacket for the afternoon.

Where to go in July

July's answer is simple: the Gulf. Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao are at their most reliable, with calm crossings, good visibility for diving and enough dry days to make a beach holiday work. The north also works well — green, misty and cheap — if you do not mind an afternoon downpour.

The Andaman is the one to avoid. Phuket and Krabi still function, but boat trips to Phi Phi and the Similans are frequently cancelled and the west-facing beaches have red flags. If your flight is already booked to Phuket, plan land-based days and take the good weather as a bonus.

What July does well is value. The same hotels on the Gulf cost 30–40% less than in January, the islands are quieter outside the European school holidays, and the landscape everywhere is at its greenest. It is the month we recommend most often to people who are not fixated on a beach tan.

The bottom line

Book the Gulf and July works well. Book the Andaman and you may spend a week watching rain. The price difference between the two coasts in July is the clearest signal of where the weather is.
