Thailand in June: green season begins

June is when the Andaman gets rough, the Gulf gets good and the whole country gets 30% cheaper.

Thailand in June: green season begins

June is green season: the Andaman gets rough, the Gulf gets good, and prices drop 30–40%. Expect short heavy afternoon showers and long sunny mornings. Koh Samui, Phangan and Tao are at their best.

The short version

  • The Gulf coast is the place to be — Samui, Phangan, Tao.
  • The Andaman has rough seas; some boat trips are cancelled.
  • Prices 30–40% below high season, with the same hotels available.
  • Rain is usually 1–2 hours in the afternoon, not all day.

Weather

Afternoon downpours, mostly short. The Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi) sees swell and some cancelled boat days; Koh Samui, Phangan and Tao are usually dry and calm.

The trade-off

Half-price hotels, empty beaches and green landscapes, against a real chance of losing a boat day. If you are flexible, it is the best value month of the year.

Where to go

The Gulf for beaches, the north for culture (the rain is lighter and the rice fields are at their best). Avoid fixed boat-dependent itineraries on the Andaman.

Where to go in June

June splits cleanly: the Gulf is good and getting better, the Andaman is rough. Koh Samui, Phangan and Tao have calm water and plenty of sun between showers, while Phuket and Krabi see 3-metre swells and cancelled boat trips.

The north is excellent in June if you accept afternoon rain. Chiang Mai is green, cool by its standards, and the waterfalls are running hard; Mae Hong Son and Pai are at their most photogenic. It is also the quietest month for the northern loop.

Prices are 30–40% below high season almost everywhere, and hotels that are full in January are half-empty. For a two-week trip on a budget, June is one of the best months of the year — provided you pick the right coast.

The bottom line

One of the most underrated months. The weather is better than its reputation, the country is quiet, and the price difference pays for a better hotel. Go to the Gulf, not the Andaman.
